Reflections: I learnt more about a person that I have never ever heard before in my life before I did this ACE project. I learnt about his contributions and his life. There is only one thing that I disliked about this assignment. It was difficult to source for infomation on the web and so had to spend a lot of time finding.

Monuments: I think that the monument should stand at Tan Tock Seng hospital as Tan Tock Seng Hospital was first built at Pearl's Hill and But was at that time called the Chinese Pauper's Hospital. Syed Omar donated land for the construction of the Chinese Pauper's Hospital at Pearl's Hill. I think that the monument should be a cross, like the cross that represents hospitals as Syed Omar donated land for the construction of the Chinese Pauper's Hospital. If he did not donate that piece of land, the Tan Tock Seng Hospital we all know today might not even exist. Sketch.(I know it might look simple but simple it might be, it represents something huge.)

Contributions: Apart for his successful trading business, Syed Omar was also noted as one of the first religious leaders and one who was a generous contributor to charitable causes. He donated land for religious buildings such as St Andrew’s Cathedral and the Masjid Kampong Melaka (a.k.a Masjid Omar Kampong Melaka or Malacca Mosque) in Chinatown. He had commissioned the construction of the mosque in 1820 for Malay fishermen, Bugis merchants and Malaccan businessmen who traded with the Chinese in Chinatown and it was the first place of worship in Singapore. Another mosque that is attributed to him is the mosque in Bencoolen street. He also donated land for the Pauper’s Hospital in 1844 which would later be Tan Tock Seng Hospital for which his nephew Syed Ali would also donate land between Victoria Street and Arab Street.

Biography: Syed Sharif Omar bin Ali Aljunied was born in 1792 and died on 9 November 1852 in Singapore. He was a patriarch of the Aljunieds in Singapore, was a noted Arab spice trader, a businessmen, a philanthropist and an important leader of the early Arab community. He left Yemen with his uncle, Syed Mohammed, and travelled to the East in 1816. They landed in Palembang, Sumatra where Syed Omar established himself as a successful trader in spices. His uncle, Syed Mohammed set up a business in Singapore by June 1819 and soon after his nephew, Syed Omar left Palembang and went to Singapore. When Syed Mohammed died, the business was passed on to Syed Omar who served as guardian for the heir apparent, Syed Ali bin Mohammed Aljunied who was only 9 years old by then. Syed Omar continued the business under Syed Ali’s name rather than his own, multiplying the already great wealth of his uncle’s.
