Biography:
Syed Sharif Omar bin Ali Aljunied was born in 1792 and died on 9 November 1852 in Singapore. He was a patriarch of the Aljunieds in Singapore, was a noted Arab spice trader, a businessmen, a philanthropist and an important leader of the early Arab community. He left Yemen with his uncle, Syed Mohammed, and travelled to the East in 1816. They landed in Palembang, Sumatra where Syed Omar established himself as a successful trader in spices. His uncle, Syed Mohammed set up a business in Singapore by June 1819 and soon after his nephew, Syed Omar left Palembang and went to Singapore. When Syed Mohammed died, the business was passed on to Syed Omar who served as guardian for the heir apparent, Syed Ali bin Mohammed Aljunied who was only 9 years old by then. Syed Omar continued the business under Syed Ali’s name rather than his own, multiplying the already great wealth of his uncle’s.
